My Life

I'm starting out on a voyage,
With heart full and head held high,
To sail the ocean, whether calm or rough,
Out under heaven's blue sky.
The voyage will be long and weary, I know,
But I hope many bright stars will appear.
So I'll sail my ship through calm or strife
With scarce a thought of fear.
I'll stay not here in this quiet place,
Where small ripples blow gently by,
But out on the deep, on the stormy sea,
There, out there, will be I.

Discovery

I know that all my faithful family members who read this blog are just going to roll their eyes when they read this, but I just made the most amazing discovery tonight. I went to the movie, "Julia & Julie" (which I enjoyed a lot, by the way), and heard a song that I thought was a made up family song. Turns out, it's not! It goes something like this,

"I love you, a bushel and a peck,
you bet your pretty neck that I do...
do do do do do do, do do do do do do
do do do do do do do do do!"

In my defense, I have never heard ANYONE EVER sing that song outside of my mother or my aunt. But Aunt Trish would always sing it like this,

"I love you, a bushel and a peck,
a bushel and a peck,
and a hug around the neck."

So I just thought they were two versions of the same song that my mom and her family grew up with...

...turns out the first one is just the chorus and the second is one of the verses!

What adds insult to injury, however, is that I did a little investigating about this song so that I could write about it. It's from "Guys and Dolls" which I have never seen! So now, maybe not just my family will be rolling their eyes, but ALL of you will be rolling your eyes at me!

I sing this song ALL THE TIME. Ok...not ALL the time, but I do sing it a lot. I can't believe that you never heard me sing it!

But I also saw this movie...LOVED IT! Amy Adams totally reminded me of Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail.

The rest of the verse...

"I love you, a bushel and a peck,
a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck; a hug around the neck, a barrel and a heap, a barrel and a heap and I'm talking in my sleep about you..."

Aunt Rowena gave me a recording of the song when I was on my mission. I'll have to play it for you next time we're together!

Kim -- Jill was singing that song when she was out here. I knew it wasn't a family made-up song, but I didn't know the other verses. "Marigold-Seed Theory" Within 2 weeks of each other, I hear about this song from 2 different sources -- Wild!! Oh and by the way ... "I love you a bushel and a peck!!"

If it makes you feel better, I have never heard that song. Something I have heard and you have heard, however, is Fairy Tale Theater Cinderella! Tristan watched it with me for his first time a few nights ago. We found it on Netflix. Oh the memories that came back. He was a good sport and appreciated all of the silliness with me. I, of course, had to tell them the story of offering you something to drink and you responding with "Perhaps some ham?" That was when I knew we were meant to be not just best friends, but as close as sisters.

I grew up loving that song, too, and I just found out a month or two ago that it's from Guys and Dolls. I had no idea either! I think I first learned it on a show called "The Elephant Show" when I was little.

Me and the Kids!
Oh they love me so much! Ha Ha Ha!
